In Shadow, we are given the first example of real technology. A steam ship. Tarrin's thoughts on that subject are pretty deep. with that book he borrowed from Keri. He instinctively understands it's power.
I was comtemplating the idea behind it, and I was thinking: The way Fel constructed this universe is so coherent that even Technology wouldnt really change the name of the game:
In and industrialized society, where man begin to apprehend the working of the universe and the immutable laws of physics. Some would lose belief in their gods. (Although given their history its doubtfull that most would)
Some cult gods would disappear, some younger gods would lose power and maybe even die. The elder gods would still be there, keeping the balance behind the scene but only being able to communicate to true believers. And of course, each elder god has it's own organised group of followers. Any die hard atheist would only have to see those priests at work, and wonder.
But one simple fact is that the rise of technology would empower the magicians.
Technology appears after all because of mans greater understanding of the universe.
Especially the wizards. The more they know about the the workings of the universes, the better a wizard can apply his magic. Same for the druids. The more they know the better they can tell what is natural or not, and the better they can instruct the All on how to go to accomplish a specific task.. And even the sorcerers can better apply their weaves, if they understood where to apply them. Transmutation on the level the sorcerers and druids can accomplish, is done through a complex reconfiguration of atoms. Only a high-tech society could ever hope to transmute a metal into any other so quickly. And in science-fiction parlance, the atomic bomb is not even high-tech. its mid-tech. if a sorcerer had knowledge of particle physicsits a simple matter to transmute a block of iron into uranium 235 or 238, and start a fission reaction.
But what really drives it home, is that technology is universal. Even magicians can use it. where everybody else would have regular tech, they would go one step further, and create technomancy.
And although tools are tireless. They are also fragile. In fact the more complicated the tool, the easier to disrupt.
so Gods can sit easy. only the weakest of them will have serious trouble. :)

Well, if the devices that make the Zakkite ships fly are not prime examples of " technomancy" then I am a horned toad with 'greenslimedrool' problems ...... buuuuuuud !

Heh. That does make me wonder exactly how much of that is tech though.blacktiger wrote:Well, if the devices that make the Zakkite ships fly are not prime examples of " technomancy" then I am a horned toad with 'greenslimedrool' problems ...... buuuuuuud !
As far as we know, a flying creature is chained to it, while a magical force pulls the ability of flight from it. The ability is channeled throughout the ship.
About the only technical thing is the different levers that influence the energy pulled from the trapped creature and make the ship go forward or back.
In other regards. Since Sorcerers can put a shell of Air into it to make a ship fly, wonder if you could charge the ship of off a Vrock or something?

Well, flying Zakkite airships doesn't look like joining the technology with magic, but rather like expanding "magical items" idea. i.e. creating items (wands, amulets, rings,...) and empowering them with magic for use even for non-magic user.
Joining technology with magic would be for example using magic to create heat for steam engine, with fallback to coal or natural oil when magic doesn't work, zeppelin like airships with magic used only for propelling them (not for lifting them in the air) and changing directions.

Re: Technology in the universe of Sennadar
I was again thinking about technology and something came to me that I didn't really pay attention to before; the cosmology in Fel's multiverse.
So let's suppose technology rise on sennadar or on Pyrosia.
men invent starships and decide to go beyond their world, to explore those shining lights in the night's sky.
The question is what the heck will they find?
We know that Sennadar is not only a world, or a solar system it's a whole universe, create by the God of gods.
and universes have multitude of solar systems. heck they have multitudes of galaxies!
We know that the Elder God was given the task to create. So basically the G.of.gs said something like Go forth my child and create ;)
Ayise created Sennadar. which maybe is the "Capital" of the universe, with the only portal to other universes? and since we know gods , at least elder gods have the gift of ubiquity, maybe there are instance of them on those multitude of other worlds in the Sennadar-universe?
food for thought ne?
And speaking of solars systems. A solar sytem containing a planet with four moons has just got to have more than one planet! their Astronomy has not reached the level where you distinguish a planet from a star? and yet they realize the truth in the system of Copernic. that the world turns around the sun. so it's not too far back. it should be a single more step from that to realize there are other worlds out there far closer than worlds sitiuated in other dimensions. Although with the same old boring laws :)
Anyway we will c what we will c.

if we asume that the world of sennadar is the capital, would any other world with a god answer to the gods around sennadar or would the alians worship an aspect to the gods of sennadar. And speaking of solars systems. what about the firestaff, if technology got that advanced that sennadarians were able to travel through space could the firestaff be hidden in a blackhole or is the firestaff unable to be taken from the world of sennadar.
i remember a line "the firestaff is unable to be taken from sennadar" but it that the world of sennadar or the universe of sennadar?
he he it is fun to think in riddles but madding to solve
