Cold-bloded Vendari in fight: Sword 12

Sword of Fire - Chapter 12
Tsukatta and Binter were probably equal in skill, training, and experience, making it a totally fair fight, but in the end Binter simply wore the human out. Vendari were reptillian and were actually cold-blooded, and that lent to them an endurance that no warm-blooded animal could match. Their metabolisms were able to pump all the energy into the muscles rather than trying to fuel a draining biological temperature regulating system.
It of course depends on the outside temperature, but thermoregulation (warm-bloodines) in birds and mammals (and probably dinosaurs) is evolutionary trait even in not so cold environments. Muscles simply works better when warm. Some fishes (tuna maybe?) and dolphins uses somewhat complicated mechanism to keep the blood going through main muscles warm, even if the same blood is cold near the skin. If the animal is big enough it/he/she can use magazined heat (during the day of course).
Besides there are other evolutionary traits which can be/are used as a supply of energy (liver maybe ?).
The conclusion is that it is not as simple as cold-blooded creatures have more endurance because they did not need to spend the extra energy for thermoregulation: to keep the body warm and to keep the body (head mainly) from overheating.

One small quibble with the chapter, though...my understanding is that cold-blooded animals are actually not capable of extended periods of activity, precisely because they must constantly take in energy from their outside environment rather than storing and metabolizing it as warm-blooded animals do. Cold-blooded predators like crocodiles, for example, are capable of great bursts of speed, but only for short periods of time. So the way to beat a cold-blooded opponent like a Vendari would actually be to maintain a moderate level of activity for an extended period of time -- the exact opposite of what's described in the chapter.

OK, I'll start out with the obvious, and weak, point.
The Vendari are magical creations, and were created to be a type of ultimate fighting force for the Zakkites. (Do we know what the weather is like there?) They were probably made cold blooded so that they could fight anywhere, and for all we know their muscles don't require heat to be able to move quickly.
Even if they do, consider it was a warm enough day on Pyrosia, so he had all the heat he needed. Binter's body didn't have to do double work though, of heating up and sweating off the excess heat like Tsukatta did.
I don't know, but I knew someone would bring up the magically created point so I thought I would first. ;D

Still I think there remains problem of "fast" (and strong, but without much endurance; think sprinter) vs. "slow" (and capable of sustaining work for long time; think marathon man) muscles. No creature should be able to do both, if physics and TASTAAFL rule/principle (There Ain't Such Thing As A Free Lunch) functions still on the world.

Bodies built for endurance, but hyper active nervous system for reflexes? You still couldn't move fast, but you'd have damn fast reactions.

I was doing a re-read and found this little bit:
"Wow indeed. As soon as Sisska lays her eggs, they'll be coming back. Her clan will care for the eggs while they're here."
That surprised him, but it should not have. Vendari were related to reptiles, though they were warm-blooded. It was only logical that they were egg-layers.
Hehe, that was in honor13. When he was in the desert talking to Kerri.

Dang. Nice catch, Dash. I've been rereading from Tower 1 and keeping a running log of errors for the 'errors' subject in Firestaff FAQ, and I completely missed that one. I remember reading it though.
(If anyone cares, I'm somewhere in the first ten chapters of Shadow Realm. I forget which one, and am taking a break to go through other stuff right now. Since I'm reading at a relaxed pace and pausing to go through other stuff I'm dreading the day someone else posts *their* accumulated list. I'm up to 70+ errors.)

LOL. My list was just something quickly thrown together, when I wasn't really even looking for them.

I guess I'm a little afraid to contribute massive error counts to Fel (don't think there are that many anyway). I don't want to disuade him from writing more<grin>! On the other hand, with 6 books completed and another well underway, Fel has done an extraordinary job maintaining the high quality. This is obviously a labour of love for him!

It doesn't dissuade me Al.
Actually, you guys are my editors and proofreaders. Errors I make get pointed out, I fix them, though you don't see those fixes because I only correct my "master files" here on my home puter. I don't release corrected chapters unless the error is so huge it demands a correction and re-release.
So scrutinize to your heart's content. I know I'm far from perfect...I'm just an amateur writer who bangs on the keyboard in his spare time. If I was being paid for this, I'd actually be more careful. Half the time I don't even spellcheck the chapters before releasing them. ;)

Considering the level of writing you're doing spare time as an amateur, it's a damned good thing you don't go full time. You are one of the better writers out there, even with the occasionally time line crisis. *grin*
And as for not using spell check, I haven't seen that.

And here I get to blow this whole arguement out of the water. *grin*
Honor and Blood Chapter 13
That surprised him, but it should not have. Vendari were related to reptiles, though they were warm-blooded. It was only logical that they were egg-layers. "How long will that be?"
Tarrin hearing from Kerri that Sisska and Binter wern't with her and she had the other Vendari guy with her.
I win!!

You are hardly a amature.
the story your have writen is equel and in many way superior to many of the publish writers.
Example: Eddings pure crapp when compared to yours.
Actuly Eddings is crapp compared to almost anybody entertaining but still low qualty.
I diverse Your writing Fel is on the level that Robert Jordan and Steven king.
Sure you make mistake and but the fact is your story IS Great and i wish i hade the time the endurance to make a RPG out of it.
the world have SO many potentials that i almost drools.
Sadly my work take to mutch time fore that.
And have to many other things that i do like writing AMATURE Fan Fiction..

I know, but it was a kinda major plot point. I couldn't help but point that one out.
