Ok from Fel in IRC, The reason Jason and Tim and other humans have the talent is because they are decendent from Faey's who crashed  on Earth a long time ago. Now that means that the Talent is something Genetic, Could Jason devise some type of Nanite that would alter the Genetic structure of all humans to allow talent in all humans? If he could and did what would the Empress do?

Hmm... I thought that "Subjugation" would hold more to the science. First, the possibility of having offspring between different species is close to nil. Second, children of parents from different species are usually sterile (think mule).

BTW. there is a book "Czarne oceany" by Polish SF author Jacek Dukaj ("Black Oceans" in English), in which such viruses are used as weapon, forst to lower the fertility of unwanted races, then to make people more telepathic. Which in this book is not all good thing, because there telepathy means lowered barriers between the minds. Which means that crowd is a real danger. Not to mention monadas, concentrated thought or emotions, like ghosts.

In IRC, he said that Faey crashed on earth long ago thats where the myth of Fairies came from..

Jyslin already stated near the first few chapters that their races were compatable.

No offense, but that seems to be a used cliche though.  Crash landed 1000s of years ago, interbred with the local populace.  At the rate we humans prolifirate, just about every human alive should have the talent then.  Just takes some pushing to get it out.

I figured the easiest way to change the genetic code would be using a nanite vs a virus, as a Virus could mutate and do unexpected things.

First, some viruses are quite stable. Second, one can boild in many security measures, like check codes or limited life of virus, or, which is easiest, disabling the ability to proliferate.

Second, I'd rather have virus motated, than nanite which operates on human body get hit by cosmic ray particle and having malfunction. Besides, nanites don't proliferate, usually.

Besides, Jason speciality is manipulation of energy.

If we want to get nitpicky about realism we could point out that the chances that there is another race like humans, with very humanlike personalities, almost identical physical shape (note that there is extremely little deviation from basic human shape at all) is about nil. Okay, perhaps on purely theoretical level it is possible, but hey come on...

So, if we can accept that there are Fey, I think we should be very easily accept the fact that they can reproduce with humans since we're obviously very similiar.

Sterile? Welllll... the level of technology faey are probably on gengineering I don't think that would be much of a problem. Well, that is if they have not ignored the research on genetics.

Note: In fact I am in favor of the faey being very humanlike. It makes it easier to relate with them, understand their personalities and actually gives me a chance to care about the characters. If faey were utterly inhuman, I wouldn't hold half of the interest I have for them now.

And yes, this thing is a bit of a cliche .. but this is something could be debated for ever. There are researches that tell there are only one (two, three, five, ten, depends whose opinion you are reading about) basic kind of stories ever made, and thus we could argue nobody in our lifetime has written anything completely original... AND entertaining.

Well, since SOMEONE had to go and say something (who shall receive NO MORE SPOILERS!  You know who you are  :P ), I'd better explain this before it gets out of hand.

The Faey and the human race are almost genetically identical.  Why they're genetically identical is something I don't care to explain right now, but there is a reason.  There are only a few very minor variations between them, more than close enough for them to interbreed.  Because of genetic quirks, children of a human/Faey pairing always resemble a human, though they might have a certain sharpening of the eartips and usually are rather handsome.
