Backyard Space Agency!

THe following link is to a news story about a guy that got NASA's attention with nothing more then a Helium weather ballon, a polystyrene box, a cheap digital camera, a gps tracker and some duct tape:

This is far from new, although I do congratulate him on his success.

Here is the earliest group I'm aware of that does this: http://www.eoss.org/

They are a group of amateur radio enthusiasts who were doing this in the Denver area when I still lived there. Their first balloon flight was in 1990.

They also made the first ever video of a weather balloon exploding at altitude. Just FYI.

I was part of a group that did this in college recently. Was a lot of fun to plan and execute!
