A thought to the future.
what connection is the future Duke or Duchess going to have to Earth ?
Honestly except as a holding of the House , not much.
One could even argue that might be know true of Jason at this sage as well.

I don't think it will matter as much in the future ..as Earth is considered owned by Jason's house now
and it matter's even less for Jason as he was born on Earth .... You'd have to do the reverse for him
saying he has less claim to Klaris then he does Earth.
an interesting thought though ....maybe i missing something

Re: A thought to the future.
Jason is tied to Earth through birth. It's where he was born and raised, and his defense of it against the Trillanes demonstrated his strong connection to that world... However, in the 5 years following his becoming the Grand Duke Karrine, his ties with Terra have diminished. Yes, it was his home, and he has strong feelings for that planet, his "home" is now Foxwood East on Karis. He has no place of his own on Terra, he does not have any family connections on Terra, it is a subject planet of House Karrine and a location for farming, Galactic trade, commerce, diplomacy, education, and a communal meeting ground for all members of the Galactic community. Yes, it was his home, and he does remember his heritage, but I think those ties are unraveling. Rann has only been to Terra a couple of times, and I'd wager that most of his strip family have never been back since they built Foxwood East. Lacking more insight into how his interaction with the Secretary General works on a daily basis, which is apparently minimal, I'd say that Terra is Kim's planet and Jason let's Kim handle it.
Re: A thought to the future.
In the future Jason might make it House policy that the Dukal family has to get their degrees/higher education at the Academy on Earth.

Re: A thought to the future.
and that's the whole point ......he's native...he will never lose his first rights to earth.miraborn wrote:Jason is tied to Earth through birth. It's where he was born and raised, .
he might lose the farming contracts but not his Birthright
No other Faey house or Fully Faey person yet known can claim that.
But jason also has an equaly strong claim to Karis through him being of House Karrine desent.
his becoming Grand Duke Karrine cemented both planets together.

Re: A thought to the future.
That's all true , but how does that relate to Rann's generation or his children? who is going to stick up for earths rights in the future as well?
As for Jason himself , miraborn might be on to something .i dunno needs more thought or more chapters from fel in a future story.HINT HINT

Re: A thought to the future.
I'd be inclined to agree with you, if not for the fact that Jason Was born and raised on Earth. Earth is in his blood; it's where he was born and raised. It's where his family lived pre-Subjugation. I figure he and his family might not have been to Earth much since they're still trying to consolidate power for his House. If his House was already established, I have no doubt he'd take his faily to Earth, if only to show them where his side of the family came from. Unfortunately, with his taking over a basically non-existant House and raising it to have millions of people on Karis, managing the distribution and researching of new technology, shuffling around the Faey and protecting his new world and responsibilities as the Grand Duke, he just hasn't had the time to show his children Earth yet. Now throw in a guerilla war with a VASTLY numerically superior empire with technology almost equal to their own, and he's not likely to have any spare time on his hands for the next few to several years anyway... If anything, I feel sorry for Jason. He's always getting *Fel'd*, it's no wonder the poor guy needs so many woman to take the nervous edge off! SHAME ON YOU FEL!!! Cut the poor man some slack, will ya! Better yet..... post Chapter one of the new book!dellstart wrote:what connection is the future Duke or Duchess going to have to Earth ?

Re: A thought to the future.
Phantom in your first post you asked if you were missing something about the question and after your second post I think so.
dellstart is not looking at the physical connection between Rann's generation and earth but the emotional one. As it stands right now the planet Earth is nothing more then a House Karinne holding to him. He wasn't born there, he wasn't raised there and he sure doesn't have an emotional connection to the planet.
Think of it this way: The town that your dad grew up in is 300 miles away from the town you grew up in. What connection/ties do you have to the town your dad grew up in? Unless your Grandparents still live there you don't have a connection and so its the same with Rann and Earth: It's just the planet his father grew up on and nothing special to him at this point, just like that town would be the town your dad grew up in and thats all, nothing special to you.

Re: A thought to the future.
I tend to disagree about Rann not having an emotional connection to Earth. I am one who studies my own family history, just as any noble would have to know and understand and even hold great pride in their own ancesty. Thus the places of ones ancestry hold great interest and self identification. The cities my parents, grandparents and even twelth great grandparents originated from hold a far greater affinity then any other city, large or small anywhere in the world. I do have a personal interest in those places, but that is only because of my research in family history. If you ask any noble, even on Earth today, and the could not only name many of their ancesters for perhaps hundreds of years, they could probably name locations and dates. Rann is being educated not only in the politics of his current house, but his ancestry as well, including the human ancestry. The effection he has for Earth will be great, if only because it's from wence he came. His father was born there, his parents met there. His father accended to greatness there. And he will rule there. You also don't see the Queen of England look down on Australia as just a part of her kingdom. It's part of her identity, and they identify with her.
Re: A thought to the future.
So far it looks like Rann is being raised as a secular middle class Faey, in regard to his social surroundings. No clue so far as to how his education will be handled, whether he'll be schooled with others outside the strip, or if there will be a tight grouping of those in the strip with small classes and lots of tutoring, which is what I think will happen. For security reasons he may not be allowed to attend the Terran Academy other than by extension classes, which would minimize his contact with Earth during the latter part of his schooling. He has no Terran relatives going back many generations, and his family had not maintained contact with the distant relatives, so there are no familial bonds to Earth other than the Grand Duke Karinne. With the move to bring all the Terran Karinnes home to Karis there will be few Terran telepaths on Terra, except for those who chose to return after being educated in their gifts; Terra will remain a non-telepathic holding of House Karinne. Karis will be his home, and the milieu he will be raised to interact with will be that of the Faey nobility. Earth will be a focus of the House, being the site of the Terran Academy, but Karis is the primary focus of the House Karinne, restoring the ecosystem, integrating the varied immigrants, establishing martial superiority so that they not suffer a repeat of what happened to Karis during the Third Civil War, maintaining their cutting edge technologies via R&D, and the secondary focus of Exile, and the search for other survivors of House Karinne. Maintaining Terra in good shape will be a responsibility so long as Terra is a holding of House Karinne, and so long as House Karinne maintains it's ties to the Academy Terra will be seen as a necessary adjunct to House Karinne, but Terra is not a Faey world, and Karis and Exile are, and this will influence the relationship between the Dukal family of House Karinne and their holdings. By striving to be as hands off as possible in regard to the administration of Terra, the ties between Terra and House Karinne are inevitably weaker than if House Karinne were to administer Terra in a more traditionally Faey manner. It will be interesting to see how well the Grand Duke Karinne instills a sense of Noblesse Oblige in His Heirs.
Re: A thought to the future.
There will always be some telepaths from the family on Earth because of the academy. Rann will have a joint education as he is currently having a dual education, as both a human, and a fay, but also as the prince. Part of that education will be the history and specialness of the human part of his heritage, and why humans object to the direct interferance by the fay. The reason Jason has left much of the day to day administration of earth to United Nations. This part of his education will also insure that he doesn't act like standard fay and become arrogant, thinking he is special because of his telepathy alone.
The unique possition house Kerrine holds in interstellar peace accords places Terra front and center in any administration because of the possition that the accadamy holds.
Rann will of course take courses through the academy. He obviously will be as technelogical as his elders but he will do a lot of his learning directly from the computer links he will have full access too. I doubt he will need the direct education of an academy other then learning the interaction of various races and to let himself be seen doing the duties of a Prince. Could you imagine the scandal of Jason NOT sending his heir to the academy? He must maintain protocol, just as most heirs of all the houses will one day be attending if they are not already.
Did they not take a family trip to shian mountain to see were the resistance once lived? These little trips enable Rann to grasp the importance of places, people, and events, even when they are not a part of his daily life.
Overall, I believe Rann will hold Terra in very high esteam and his subjects on Terra will be his to protect and guide, even if from afar. Like his father, he will look upon Terra as a second home, but also be hands off, because of human fears of telepathy. He will look after Terra like a big brother looks after his younger sibling.

Though its interesting to see both your and laplands response as well.
