Really Stupid Ideas by Governments

Now I realise this topic may be an explosive issue but I really have to vent somewhere as this idea may seriously affect my connection to the internet.

The newly elected Rudd Labor Government (Australia) has decided to "clean feed" the internet connections to all homes and schools. Accordingly the mandate will “supposedly censor” the Internet of pornography and other "inappropriate material", however it goes further, by requiring individuals to opt-out of the scheme rather than request filtering from their service provider. (This gives me a really bad Big Brother image  )

The civic and political rights that this policy may, that is to say probably, breach doesn't even compare to the massive technical and technological difficulties to a) Implement it and b) The massive amount of damage it may potentially cause to our beleaguered broadband infrastructure and finally c) The massive cost it would be to implement and we would have to bear with even higher broadband prices. Well there goes fiscal responsibility on an overheating economy with inflation nearing 3% and interest rate rises about to be shoved down our throats in February.

Man this bites

wow, haha, you could be the new China. :D
I'm really happy our internet community is rather united as far as censorship is concerned. The last time the government decided to fight file sharing and issued a regulation to the service providers to filter several torrent sites they, almost unanimously, refused. :D

"Really Stupid Ideas by Governments"

I believe that whole title is self redundant. Shall we list some?

1) Censorship - Information always finds a way to flow.
2) Gun Control - Everywhere it's tried violence rates go up.
3) Government Health Care - Can we say economics? I knew we could.
4) Totalinarianism - Freedom yields prosperity and vice versa.

If we only had a little blinking red button that would engage a uncommon sense promoter ... oh well.

Yeah they took away all automatics after the Port Arthur massacre but you can still have a semi-auto handgun or a single shot rifle (I think).
