eg: "on-the-scene" TV, and people with no clue and/or a crap camera taking flash photography.
Usually it goes something like this:
Person A takes a photo of a group of friends, but they don't know how to work the camera*.
Persons B-C all get light up like there's a giant spotlight on them (which, effectively there is) - the normal shadowing present (which your brain uses to detect depth) is completely blown away, and suddenly your face looks like you're retaining a whole lot more fluid/fat than you should be.
Persons B-C look at themselves, and their natural self-criticism combined with the poor lighting results in a comment like "OMG, I LOOK FAT"
