Tarrin gets around the rules of only practicing one kind of magic because of the alterations made on the were-cats during the breaking. I think the rule states that no mortal can learn more than one type of magic in Sennadar, set down by Niami herself. Tarrin gets around that because as a were-cat he is ageless in the truest sense.
If you read chapter one Tarrin reveals why he does not try to touch the all of the crossroads because he would be burnt to a crisp in instants, his body is not strong enough to handle the awesom power that is there.
And yes it would be interesting to see Tarrin learn some magic like Runes.

A couple of points that I wish to point out are : Dolanna has allways shown faith in Tarrin or at lease from the second book. it Might not of been the type of faith that a God Needs from his/her worshipers ,but she has always displayed faith in him. And Second the part about giving between god and worshiper ,if you think about it Tarrin has allways givin to Dolanna . RESPECT Dolanna is the only person other then his parents and God sthat didn`t have top beat respect into him.He has always shoren her respect ,listen to her (even when what she was saying went aginst everything he wanted to do),as well as follow ger instructions with out any real arguements (well for a wercat anyway). How many other Gods treat any mortals that way? Anyway this is how I see it
My mind is a terrable thing to leave empty, It comes up with weird things to fill the empty places.

Ignorance is bliss, knowledge is power. Are the powerful very unhappy?

Now that Tarrin has 2 soul talismans. Extremely rare items, Many possibilities present themselves.
He could sell them for an astronomical sum; (He seem rather pauper right now. Although it's true he can easily steal anything with that awesome doppelganger ability) or exhange them for a rare item or precious knowledge. There are surely sages specializing in demonology and master wizards that would salivate at the mere thought of having one of those. He could also use them. There are a no doubt a number of fell spells or rituals in Arcane magic that use souls. Demon are souls of some power, and it would probably enhance the spell and ritual. To say nothing of the fact that using their soul to fuel the magic is poetic justice. He could try to learn the secrets of the Abyss from them. I have no doubt that given the soul of a demon, a wizard can find a way to deduce the name, and with both the soul talisman and the true name, totally enslave them.
Tarrin also cant be corrupted by demonic influences, because of his godly soul. To say nothing with the fact that he is aligned with honor and justice. He is then shielded from the influence of negative energy and he can delve in the dark half of arcane magic safely!
As phandelbrass said, its not the magic that is evil, but what the users do with it. Negative energy is just too easily turned to evil use. You can do evil stuff with positive energy magic too.
It always rubbed me the wrong way the fact that wizards separate their magic so. Neatly and completely in half. Everything about Fels universe tells me that it might be hard to join them, but joined positive and negative energy can do things together that neither can do alone. Its probably the wizardry version of weavespinner magic, or rather high sorcery. The confluence of positive and negative energy.
