Excellent chapter, though was a bit peeved at the loose "science" around the exploding super ship Fel described in this chapter. Fel is usually great at making the space magic plausible, but shockwaves in space can't happen, unless you make it more science fiction-y. Blast shockwaves require a medium to travel through, the force of the explosion displacing the matter surrounding it in a wave. Space is a vacuum, so by definition there is no medium surrounding the ship to propagate a wave of force by displacement. I imagine there would be plenty of energy released on explosion, and literally tons of shrapnel, but a plain old shockwave won't happen in space.

Normally you would be correct, but in these cases, the explosion is the size of a small nova and the shockwave is pure energy. The suns energy reaching earth is an example. Energy that has mass doesn't need a medium to transmit through a vacuum, it only needs energy to induce velocity.
First, understand this: the power plant in the center of those super-ships doesn't just use a few cubic liters of hydrogen. They use a few TRILLION cubic liters. There's a ton of mass (figuratively, not literally) in the center of that plant, crushed by artificially created gravity to induce fusion, and more and more mass is added as plasma is extracted to power the ship to maintain the reaction. They are literally miniature stars, and they have mass. Lots and lots of mass. And when you take away the gravity that crushes it down, it will expand with exponential speed. In other words, explode.
Now, when the ship explodes, take that mass and add it to the mass of the ship itself, which becomes part of the explosive shockwave when the power plant detonates, then give it a velocity that puts that mass on a vector which expands spherically, the density of the mass decreasing proportionally as the vector moves away from its origin point.
The shockwave isn't the air being compressed in front of an explosive wake, it's the energy released by the explosion of the power plant, released as the uncompressed plasma (hydrogen and helium), thermal energy (heat), light, and the vaporized/atomized mass of the ship. That means that the shockwave is more mass than energy, mass invested with tremendous heat and velocity by the explosion, reduced to a vapor or atomized by the energy of the explosion.
That's why the way to avoid damage being caught in the explosion of a ship is to outrun the shockwave effect, which weakens quickly as it travels away from the point of origin as the energy and mass lose density.
