So went and saw Star Wars with wife/kids (might be spoilers)

Post by Hearly »

Ok So Ben is Han and Leia's Son. half way through the movie, I actually thought of something that I didn't think of Before... Anakin and Luke both could understand R2-D2 and Rey could understand BB-8, now correct me if I'm wrong but they've never shown any other person who could understand them, so I was thinking that makes Rey Luke's Daughter... Or at least I think so...

Nah, if you own a druid long enough you don't need to understand exactly what it tries to beep at you. Its like a pet, where it just needs to look at you in a certain way and you know whether your pet is hungry, wants to be petted or just needs to go outside to.. well, you get the picture. Wherever did you get the idea that the ability to understand droids is an ability only gained by being born to parents that have that ability? It's not like the force. ;-)

Anyway, won't go watch that movie, never will, hope it's soon forgotten. One of the greatest advantages of the Star Wars Universe was that all books that followed EP6 where canon. It all fit together. In one book, two prominent jedi had a child. A couple books later that child happened to have grown up a bit and again a few decades later that child was grown. All authors worked together to create a story that just didn't resurrect a hero because one author wanted him to be part of his story.

Star Trek is another major universe to write stories in. There, you most often had books that started in Situation A, much happened, then more stuff happened, then the end came and everything had to go back to Situation A. And well, if that wasn't possible, that was not a problem either. The next book just assumed Situation A was back. No need to be all that cohesive. Well, you could always get together a series of books under a certain label in the Star Trek universe to be cohesive together.

Now, since Lucasfilm was sold in 2012 to Disney, they just want to make money with their new brand. The new movie is not targeted at anyone who has read the books. It is not targeted at anyone who is interested in Star Wars. It is targeted at all those people who just want to be entertained and see nice special effects and action. The story... well, the things i've read about EP7 sound like its a mashup of the old movies, done in modern technology. Even Chewbacca, the wookie, got back. No matter that he was supposed to have died after a moon fell on him while saving Anakin Solo as a little boy. And oh, hey, the new light sabers have nifty guards. No matter if that guard would get hacked off by another light saber like its not even there, they had to come up with a new form of lightsabers after all.

All those books aren't worth anything compared to the money Disney will earn with their new acquisition. Very sad indeed. :-(

I do think Rey is Luke's kid, but that's not why.

The Holocron continuity database was that Lucas setup to allow others to write in his universe was a bad, bad, bad idea. What Lucas should have done was gotten off his fat arse and done a new trilogy every 10 years. This "resting on ones laurels" is how all this discombobulation began. That and when Lucas sold the rights he should have enforced the Continuity Database upon Disney if he actually cared about all those stories that others had written, or they wouldn't be allowed to buy it. If Disney wouldn't accept this, someone else would have, trust me, the chance to make all those Billions would be to big a temptation to turn down.

On the other hand, most of the books in the Expanded Universe were pretty much trash... and greatly contributed to my ambivalence when it comes to Star Wars... I went and saw the movie and enjoyed it. But on the other hand it is the stupidity of the Jedi that basically ruins Star Wars for me. In EVERY movie and every book I have ever read the Jedi are constantly surprised by the Sith. It gets old for the good guys to keep walking into traps. You may escape once or twice. But no ones luck is that good, not even with the assistance of the force. After all the enemy has the dark side of the force, the yang. Yet time after time the Jedi never see it coming. Here is your Moron hat, the dark side wins simply because of your inability to plan for the unexpected. Prior Planing 'n Preparation Prevents Piss-Poor Performance People!

I disagree. If you have done a good job with the first three movies, it doesn't mean that 10 years later you will do one with the next three as well. See how the Episodes 1 to 3 turned out. Wasn't Jar Jar Binks a great character? I'm sure someone, somewhere must have loved him... There have been plenty of movies that came out great but those successors went from bad to worse fast.

Star Wars is one of the biggest names in science fiction. It is literally a name that no person that likes science fiction does not know, along with Star Trek. Or does anyone know a more successful name? So, George Lucas must have done plenty of things right, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to even sell Star Wars to Disney. Or do you think anyone would pay to get their hands on... :-)
