Kinda bad news.

Post by Fel »

While saving my reference file for Subjugation, I lost power, and it killed my ref file.

This won't delay the chapter, which I hope to have out sometime next week, but it DOES mean that I no longer have a quick reference for certain facts, names, etc., and I'm not about to go digging through 10 chapters of material to find a name mentioned once, for example.

This means that when I release sub11, there's gonna be quite a few more errors than usual.  I'll be going on memory alone, and that's not what it used to be.

Just make a list of them for me, and I'll fix them.

Guess this means I'll have to reread sub from chapter 1 and compile a new file, lol...but I'll do that after I finish chapter 11.

This should not be a problem there is more than enough maggot eating bug chasers to catch all the minor errors. [grin]

The good news is that there will be a new chapter next week!!   ;D

Ouch Sorry to hear that.

Well that blows all of our images of you for keeping all of this in your head  :D

Will be looking forward to seeing the new one when it's posted... any Clues as to what your going to work on after chapter 11 is done and posted ?

Still addicted to them

There are two kind of people: those who make backups, and those who would  make backups ;-)
Excuse for my wise-ass crack, but I couldn't restrain myself...

P.S. Shouldn't this topic be titled "Lost my notes/fact sheet for Subjugation"?

<hr>Shadowhawk, who don't make (regular) backups either.

what kind of info do you keep on that file? between all of us i think we could rewrite that info for you.

Care to tell us the info and how it is organized so that we can try?

Fel, most of  us here are very willing to do anything to help you out in your writings. Of course, it will make us have to reread all of sub, but that is not really a punishment.

After reading this thread and the volunteers to gen out a REF FILE the thought occurred to me that it might be a fun thread to start.

List the assorted names, places, create a time line and list the property of assorted devices.

And while we are at it start another thread for a bug list.

This will do two things:       First it will give the bug chasers something to do between chapters.
Second if they do a good enough job on the REF FILE and BUG LIST the subsequent chapters will be like putting them in a round room and telling them there is a bug in the corner. They will look all day and find nothing.

So, how about we put together a fund to buy Fel a tape drive and about 365 tapes so he can do a backup every night and keep records for a year  ;D

I suggest using a Gmail account as backup.
It can be used as a file system (under linux): http://richard.jones.name/google-hacks/ ... ystem.html

Or he could simply mail his important files to his own account. 1 GB should be enough for daily backups of changed files.

I'd like to see how the advertising algorithm reacts to his files... ;)

Have you tried using file recovery software? might not get all of it back...

I used to have a really really good one, took a while to do it's magic, but worked rather well.

I'm sure some of the other geeks here will be able to dig up a good NTFS / FAT "undelete" utility, if I can't...

Edit:
If your reference file was less than 64KB, then this might help out: http://diskinternals.com/products.shtml

If your drive is NTFS: Use "Uneraser"
If your drive is FAT32: Use "FAT Recovery"

Save / Install to a different drive if possible.

Edit 2:
Less than 100K?

Is the file gone or is it just corrupted and cannot be opened?

A corrupted MS-Office document can often be recovered with the "import" of other programs (eg. MS Word -> OpenOffice, MS Excel -> MS-Access). As a last resort a text editor can be used to copy fragments of the document - the formatting cannot be recovered that way.

To avoid data loss during saving "well-written" software would write a temporary file, delete the old one and rename the temp.-file to the real filename.

Try looking for _any_ file that was created near the time of failure. Maybe a copy of your reference is somewhere in the temp-folder.

I'm not sure it would help as saving often overwrites the old data/directory entry, but it's worth a try.

A lot of what can be done depends on several things
1. What OP System he's using
2. What has happened on his system since the power outage crash.
3. What changes has the user made since the event happened
4. Any other factors that rely on the answers to the 3 questions above

I didn't LOSE the file.  It's still there.

It's just filled with garbage, not my reference text.

Fel if you were using word  some time you it saves an Ato recovery file. all you have to do is search the tcomputer and type:
AutoRecovery*.asd
If word made an atuorecovery you should be able to find it that way.  I hope that might help.
