Ok, Gov Scott (FL) told the Fed gov't thanks but no thanks to 2.4 billion to build a high speed rail between Orlando and Tampa..
Now I live about 30 miles north of Tampa and I honestly do not understand why this expense would be necessary, Yes I do go to NYC a lot and the Subway makes sense there, but down here you need a Car to get anywhere (unless you live in downtown tampa and use the sorry excuse for a bus system), Now if I was going to go to Orlando, even if there would be a station close by where I could hop on it, why would I? I'd need to rent a car then in Orlando to get around? If I wanted to take my wife and soon to be 2 kids (1 due in April) to Disney, would I prefer to drive there (around 2 hour drive) or take a train and have more expense from doing that (2 hour drive is about 20-30 bucks in gas)..
Am I missing something? I mean even if I wanted to go to NY, I'd just catch a plane and be there in 2 hours, why would I want to spend at min 6 hours (figure 200mph train)

heh, i live in Wisconsin, and my state just gave that cash back to the federal gov't. out prior (lame duck) gov signed the deal with the feds to build a rail line against the wishers of the voters. the new governor gave all the money back his first day in office. i had wondered where that money went lol!
Re: I'm not understanding something with High Speed Rail
They want to do the same thing between San Antonio and Austin. Its about 60 miles between them. And get this they want to put in 16 stops for people to get on and off. This just doesn't make sense in a metropolitan area that can easily drive in under an hour and a half. And like it was said you'd have to rent a car or be on public (read that as bus) transportation. If you really want to get Texan's mad ask us to give up guns, trucks (or cars or big SUVs), the death penalty, and boots. Oh yeah I shouldn't forget about the idea that they will condem the land for "right of way". That will blow the gasket on the rest of the ones who weren't upset with one of the prior list of items. And then it will be how much money will it take to subsidise the high speed rail system long term. I think the state could probably go out and buy us all new Chevy Volt for the cost of a high speed rail line between Austin and San Antonio. Though it would be fun if we could get those Austin Vulpan's down here for some margarita's on the river.

Re: I'm not understanding something with High Speed Rail
Thinking somewhere, where this might work is a High speed train between Boston, New York, Philly and DC, maybe also include Harrisburg as it's a major Rail hub.
Now with the existing subway/bus/cabs that exist in those markets, a Train would make sense just because of the density of people and the access.
But Even lets say Between Orlando and Miami (which is about a 6 hour drive) I might consider it if they can toss my car on the train too, and is reasonable price..

Orlando to Miami doesn't take quite that long , its four and change. I vacation there quite often. Though my bro in in law did it in about just under three and a half and you could smell the burning rubber from tires.Hearly wrote:Thinking somewhere, where this might work is a High speed train between Boston, New York, Philly and DC, maybe also include Harrisburg as it's a major Rail hub.

True, I was actually factoring it from where I am, which is New Port Richey which is about 30-40 miles north of Tampa.dellstart wrote:Orlando to Miami doesn't take quite that long , its four and change. But the point still remains IMO there wouldn't be enough Riders to really justify spending 2.6 billion+ on it.
