One of my favorite books is Peshawar Lancers, by S.M. Stirling. It's an alt-hist. sci-fi. Hard to describe, but in the 1800s an asteroid hits the earth and to survive the nations of Europe move south. The book starts about a 100 years afterwards and is just great. A good fantasy series is The ...
