I guess I haven't gotten the point across that the Eklunds are a rather loud and
rambunctious lot, but they are, so when someone speaks quietly it's a little
unusual.
Ollie and Nils were both miners and miners are often loud, independent men who
work and play hard. Now they are men who own farms and businesses, so they are used
to getting their way.
Dagny and Bjorn were both hockey players - BIG defencemen -- bruisers in other
words -- the kind Tor calls 'thugs' and likes to put in their place. They wanted to
play hockey and they didn't have Tor's skillset, so they did what their coaches asked.
Alva was the center on the high school basketball team and guided her team to
the Provincial championships three years running.
Olga loves parties and company, but she is the undoubted boss of her household.
Kai is a 'Golden Gloves' contender and a salmon fisherman going to sea out of
Vancouver.
Hanna is the defacto 'boss' of two local stores and one local business.
And on, and on, ad infinitum.
Tor is without a doubt, the quietest one of the whole family, unless something
goes haywire, then he reacts -- often energetically. So for him to speak up is
unusual, especially for him to lose his cool. You see he found out when he was
four or five years old that two older brothers and an older sister could make an
unruly little whelp behave and he's never forgotten that lesson.
Oh, and that review? That was Ollie's way of justifying himself for arranging to
give his youngest son a car. Let's face it, the kid is only fifteen and his dad
is arranging for him to have a hot-rod Ford, so Ollie is feeling just a bit
guilty about it.
Anyway, you've now read some more 'back-story' that may or may not appear in the
story itself.
